About The American School of Yaoundé

An accepting, nurturing and challenging environment in which students learn to approach life with curiosity, confidence, compassion and a sense of responsibility to themselves and the world around them.

Location

Considered part of “French West Africa,” Cameroon is a politically stable, democratic country with a German, French and British colonial history. Regarded as having ‘a bit of everything” in Africa, the country’s varied geography includes mountains, volcanoes, rainforests, savannahs and beaches. ASOY, as school is commonly known, is located in the capital city of Yaounde (ya-OHN-day) which has both tropical wet and dry seasons and an average year round high of 80 degrees. The school campus is approximately 4 acres in size and is located near the central part of Yaounde in an area known for its sizable lake as ‘Quartier Du Lac’.

The School

Founded in 1964, ASOY is an independent, non-profit, secular school offering a program of academic excellence to American, international, and Cameroonian students in grades K-12. The campus consists of 20 classrooms, two computer labs, two science labs, a large multi-media library, learning support center, and Canteen and Activity Center. Sports facilities include 4 tennis courts and a covered basketball court, swimming pool, and playing field.

Students and Faculty

The student body is approximately 25% American, 25% Cameroon nationals, and 50% comprised of an additional 29 countries. Being in the capital city of Cameroon means that ASOY enrolls many of the diplomatic children from various international embassies. Class size is small with a student to teacher ratio of 5:1. The boarding component of ASOY is also small but with comfortable facilities and caring adults. Due to its size, ASOY provides an intimate and nurturing family atmosphere for all students, both those in boarding as well as the day school.

High School

The high school presently has 45 students representing 29 nationalities. Approximately 20% are boarding students. The dormitory is located 2 miles from the main campus with transportation provided between school and the residence hall. The AP courses currently offered at ASOY include English Language and Literature, Calculus, US History, Economics, World History, Comparative Government and Politics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Spanish and French.

Activities

After-school activities are an integral part of the school curriculum. These activities give students opportunities to explore both new areas of interest as well as pursue existing interests. Co-curricular activities at ASOY include: sports, art, music, crafts, chess club, folk dancing, computer games and student council. The Activity Center offers swimming, Tae-Kwon-Do, and tennis lessons. Major varsity sports include volleyball, soccer, and basketball. For students wishing to volunteer, ASOY has developed a comprehensive community service program called ‘Hands Across Cameroon’, which involves working at orphanages and with other local NGO’s.
