Peru is a large and amazingly diverse country. Its geography includes the arid coastal desert along the Pacific, the high Andean mountains, and the Amazonian tropical forests extending into Brazil. Its cultural diversity is equally impressive. Roughly half of Peru's people are indigenous, another third are mestizo (mixture of Spanish and native), with the remaining a mixture of European, African, Japanese and Chinese minorities. Peru makes for an incredibly rich experience for any volunteer.
Through our well-established Peruvian non-profit partner, SAGE offers volunteer programs at schools in the modern metropolitan capital of Lima. Volunteers can also spend their time in one of Peru’s largest cultural meccas, Cusco. Volunteering from two weeks to three months, participants will learn about rich South American culture during their stay with host families.
Projects Include:
- Assisting teachers in local schools
- Administering basic health care for the underfunded hospital system
- Assisting in family planning, basic health care, hygiene and nutrition
- Teaching computer skills at various levels
- Working in shelters or associations that assist female victims of violence, single mothers, orphans or homeless children
- Helping villages to build new structures
Language Opportunities
Spanish language classes in Peru take part before the participant’s volunteer placement. The classes offer different levels of intensive Spanish depending on the volunteer’s knowledge of the language. Students will have a warm, friendly homestay while they are in classes and full support at the program office. Homestays provide two meals a day for students, as most participants take some of their free time to explore the city with their new friends from the language classes.
